NaPoWriMo Day 12: Index Poem

Standard

For today’s NaPoWriMo prompt, we were invited to examine a book’s index and find some language that could be used in a poem, or invent our own interesting index as the start to a poem.  I immediately thought of B. K. S. Iyengar’s legendary work Light on Yoga, opened the book toward the back, discovered I was already at the index and staring at this:

‘Neti Neti’   ‘Not this! Not this!’  The experience of samadhi is not like other experiences, which can be described in words.  About it the sages say “It is not this!  It is not this!’, for speech fails to convey the feeling of joy and peace experienced in that state.

“This’ll do just fine,” I said to myself…

************************
Is it this?
No, not this!
Not this!
Well, how about this?
No, it is not this!
It is not this!
Well, what is it then?
Not this!
It cannot be heard
nor put into words
cannot be seen or felt
or tasted…any effort
to prove the contrary
will simply be wasted.
Well, how can I experience
this bliss of which you can’t speak?
If I could tell you,
it wouldn’t be what
you are seeking to attain.
Just sit, and breathe.
When mind and body fall away,
when consciousness dissolves,
what remains?
Not this!
