Grateful For What Is

Standard

Who would I be without my stories?
Just a woman, fingers dancing on keys,
sitting here, breathing, at peace.
My body danced this evening
and now it is spent.
My heart sang and laughed.
My hands painted and drew
and mothered and colored today.
Without my stories
this day was utter paradise.
Please Divine Spirit,
let me stay attuned to what is real,
that I may live in this one moment
grateful for what is.

The Universe Laughs Last

Standard

The Universe is a jokester,
its arms lightly crisscrossing
its abdomen
doubled over in laughter
pointing at me…
bellowing bawdy guffaws
AH HAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAA!
Slapping its thigh,
so satisfied with itself.
Every time I think I get it,
I learned the lesson,
I figured it out,
something else happens,
and a big neon sign flashes
right in front of my eyes,
SURPRISE!
And I’m standing there,
mouth hanging open,
eyes blank,
WAIT, WHAT?
Looking so foolish.
And that’s how I figured
no one escapes from the game.
I could play smart
or I could play dumb
but I don’t get to sit out.
And the universe always
laughs last.

I Should Have Chosen Silence

Standard

You’d think after all this time
I’d have the sanity
to decline
important conversations
after he’s had too much wine.
But my ego was bruised
and I guess my mind confused
which course of action
would lead to resolution
and which to more confusion.
When my fear speaks louder
than the quiet wisdom within
it’s time to shut my mouth
and retreat far away
from the din of those
who know not
that silence is an option.

I Love Her

Standard

Opening to what is possible,
dropping the story of fear,
healing the shame,
questioning the feelings of unworthiness,
really discovering who I am.
I realize that this person
is deeply worthy of love and respect.
She is kind, powerful, inspiring,
hardworking, generous;
she always does her best.
And I love her.

All There Is

Standard

Could it be
you simply cannot see
the whole picture?
Could it be
that you are getting caught
in mental stories?
Before you fly off the handle
try to find a safe place to land.
Very often
what we most fear
is what we most deeply need
to learn.
The mechanisms we use
to cover our true feelings
only serve to prolong the agony
of imagined loneliness.
Set down your burdens
for just one moment
and see how truly loved you are.
In that loving place
awaken to the connectedness
of all beings, you included.
Love is all there is.

You Are Home

Standard

Return home now.
When you are out
wandering the world
and you feel lost, alone,
scared, helpless,
simply return home.
But where is home?
Ah, now that is the real question.
Home is where you can find peace,
love, acceptance, nourishment,
rest, a sanctuary,
a warm welcome.
Is home a physical location?
What happens if your dwelling place
were suddenly washed away
or blown away, or blown up
or torn down or taken away?
Do you have no home?
Are you now homeless?
No! You will always have a home.
Sit. Close your eyes, get quiet, get still.
Sit taller. Take a deep breath.
Look inside, look deeper.
Home is where you can find peace,
love, acceptance, nourishment,
rest, a sanctuary,
a warm welcome.
Home is wherever you are.
Home is YOU.
You are HOME.

I Love This Self

Standard

Who is the self
behind the stories
behind the words
behind what I have seen
behind what I have heard?
Who is this Self?
I keep looking;
I cannot find it.
I can’t see it or hear it
or taste it or touch it
or smell it…
But I can feel it.
It’s there when
I get stillĀ and silent
and go inside myself.
It’s behind the noise
and the heartbreak
and the dissatisfaction
and all the stories
of all the mistakes I made
and all the reasons
I can never be truly happy…
It’s there shining, smiling gently,
arms open wide,
ready to welcome me back home.
I love this Self.
