Grateful For What Is

Standard

Who would I be without my stories?
Just a woman, fingers dancing on keys,
sitting here, breathing, at peace.
My body danced this evening
and now it is spent.
My heart sang and laughed.
My hands painted and drew
and mothered and colored today.
Without my stories
this day was utter paradise.
Please Divine Spirit,
let me stay attuned to what is real,
that I may live in this one moment
grateful for what is.

Art Salvation

Standard

Allowing my creativity to flow
without making a big deal about it…
No pressure, not trying to impress anyone,
just trying to save my own life
through color, texture, and the freedom
to bring my inner world outside
where it can dance, breathe,
and be painted into being.
I never knew that such simplicity
could yield salvation,
but here I sit feeling grateful
to have another day
to pick up my pen, my brush,
and remember the voice
that quietly speaks within me.

More Beauty…from Busy Mockingbird

Standard

My heart was so touched by this…a creative mama encouraging her child’s deep imagination to flourish with wonderfully positive qualities, collaboration, trust, strength, sensitivity. What a beautiful world we live in!

I’ve been drawing and painting our daughter Myla for a long time. I was intimidated at first, but she quickly became my favorite subject. I was looking back at some of my artwork featuring her, and noticed how it’s changed as much as she has over the years. My first of her was this one, […]

NaPoWriMo 2017 Day 24: Ekphrasis Marginalis

Standard

medieval marginalia

Let us join hands and dance now,
though it be late and the light is fading;
music will be our guide.
When we listen with our hearts
we don’t need our eyes to see;
our differences melt away
when we join in camaraderie.
Let us away now to the enchanted wood
where the ancient oaks shelter us from the wind
and there we will dance and sing together
and when we are done
we will begin again.

It was an interesting idea for today’s NaPoWriMo prompt, write a poem inspired by art–known as ekphrasis– and the art form suggested was Medieval marginalia.  I never knew those bored monks could be so bawdy. I chose a more PG image because that is more my speed.

Innocent Creativity

Standard

Creativity without a goal–
undefined
unrestrained
without pressure
without judgment
without hesitation
without expectation…
the freedom of this.
To be a child again
able to easily tap into
this endless fount
of inspiration
without rumination.
Watching my daughter
I remember my own childhood
moments of creative bliss.
So grateful to have her here
reminding me
of what still can be
when I can get out of my way
and simply enjoy this day
of alive, innocent creativity.

Inner Awakening

Standard

I’ve been meditating on creativity,
what it is,
and how to express my creativity
more often
in order to live an inspired life.
My mind opens to the possibility
that I don’t need to be a famous artist
in order to create art…
I don’t even need another soul
to see my creations
and recognize them as art
in order for me to enjoy them.
It’s the moment of creation–
not necessarily the end result–
that brings the opening
and still more opening
to the possibilities that lie
within and ahead of me.
Living in that freshness
life becomes an exciting adventure
once more.
I thought I needed to travel the world
for my life to be interesting…
It turns out that my inner landscape
is just as fascinating as the one I survey
in the outer world,
The discoveries I make within myself
are even more astounding
than anything I could chance upon
out there,
The treasure I find on this inner exploration
is worth more than any precious gem
found on earth.

Our creative talents and abilities
are portals to the consciousness
that encircles the universe,
the same power that moves galaxies.
Tuning into this power
and manifesting from this consciousness
we are given the precious opportunity
to live inspired, uplifted lives
moving within the currents of energy
that move the oceans, the mountains,
the wind, the stars,
that keep the planets in orbit.
With no particular goal in mind
and no pressure to perform a certain way,
we can create for the sake of creation
and enjoy the act itself.
And if we allow this joy to bubble up
and radiate outwards,
we will have the honor
of inspiring and uplifting others.
And so my friend,
picking up your pen, or your brush,
or your instrument,
singing, or dancing,
or looking through the lens of your camera,
cooking a beautiful meal,
arranging flowers,
knitting, sewing,
sculpting, weaving–
these are not selfish acts
or flights of fancy…
These are you living from
your deepest, highest self
and making a profound contribution
to all beings.
And so my friend,
what are you waiting for?
We are longing for your shining light.
