Full of Life

Standard

Enjoy world peace.
It does not need to be created,
it is already here, inside your heart.
No need to search for love…
Look into the faces of your beloveds,
see their eyes shining with love for you.
The labels you place on yourself–
man, woman, black, white,
Christian, Muslim, young old–
these are doors that slam shut
and keep you in a tiny room, confined.
Open the doors and step out of the room,
see the big, wide open world
full of possibility,
full of joy,
full of life.

In the Presence of the Monks

Standard

What is the opposite of pretense?
Quiet, calm, radiating confidence,
lovingkindness, sweetness, joy,
contentment.
Being in the presence of the monks
I’m reminded of what safety is,
and simplicity, and humility,
and equality.
Ahh, beauty.
And it’s the inner beauty
that touches me far more deeply
than anything I look upon.
They taught us about impermanence tonight,
sweeping up the gorgeous mandala
and pouring the sand into the river.
What cannot be erased is the joy
felt by so many beloveds
sharing in this vibrant experience
of taking in such beauty
and letting it go completely.

NaPoWriMo Day 28: A Skeltonic Poem About Freedom and Joy

Standard

I wish there were a way
to open my heart and sway
letting go of all dismay,
body breathing I pray,
arms reaching for the sun,
dancing until I’m done.
Is this dance just for one?
No, it has just begun.
There will be others:
fathers,  brothers,
sisters, mothers.
Everyone in this world
will follow where others have twirled
like trees with leaves unfurled,
experiencing the ecstasy
of breathing utterly free
blessing the union of you and me,
and everybody, everybody, everybody.

If you have been following my blog, you know that most of my poems have no rhyme schemes at all…they are mostly free verse poems following musing and rumination and in general wanting to experience freedom from any creative constraint. Today, however, the NaPoWriMo prompt invited us to try out Skeltonic verse, and I took up the challenge. It’s good to step out of one’s comfort bubble every once in a while. Just on the other side of the bubble is our fullest potential, just waiting for us to reach it.

Musings on the Eve of My 40th Birthday

Standard

I turn 40 tomorrow.
I’ve been met with
expressions of sympathy
and knowing looks–
I’ve been asked,
How do you feel about that?
Are you okay with that?
Of course I am!
Whether I want it to or not
the sun rises and sets,
Whether I’m ready for it or not
the weather is constantly changing
and
Whether I like it or not
I’m getting older every day,
It is a privilege to be here,
to have a family,
work I love,
the ability to create something
out of thin air,
to learn,
to have this life.
And one more thing…
As I’ve aged
I have discovered
what a gift it is
to be able to give to others,
to have the energy
to act in concrete ways
that will benefit others.
I’m happy to work tomorrow,
to teach a yoga class
and help my students relax.
Their appearing in the room
is a wonderful gift.
Offering me the opportunity
to share the best of myself
with them is even better.
It’s a blessing to leave behind
the preoccupations
of my earlier years
and dive into the joy
of what is right there
in front of me.
Happy Birthday to Me!
I was given this life
and I am so grateful.

Back to Your Center

Standard

It’s finally sinking into my thick skull
that in order to be truly happy,
I need others in my life
and that giving to others
is an act of giving to myself.
To see those around me glowing with happiness
is a greater gift than words can describe,
and to know that I had a part in that happiness–
pure bliss!
It’s a paradox that the more you give away
the more you have,
but this is the way it works
when your heart takes the lead.
Living in the paradox with an open mind
life opens up and hidden mysteries are exposed,
drops of dew glistening in the morning sun,
here and then gone.  Let go of all of it.
What I once thought was real fades away
to reveal something even more beautiful,
graceful, precious and kind,
the way the chrysalis fades away
once the butterfly emerges.
Be still and watch as the world spins around you.
You are the center of your own universe,
a divine creator, more powerful than you could know.
Now, what shall you spin out from your center,
what will you weave into the fabric of your life?
Each day a new thread appears.
Can you follow it back to your center and rejoice?

Irresistible Heart

Standard

The pressure is off.
You don’t need to be perfect.
Just work hard
to discover who you really are
then share that with the world.
Your voice is unique,
so is your mind
and your spirit…
there will never be another
exactly like you.
The world longs to know you,
the real you.
Would you deny us that?
Have mercy on us,
give yourself completely to us,
know who you are,
and shine that self
into the world,
illuminating us
with the radiant beauty
of your irresistible heart.

Answer the Call

Standard

If the quickest path to misery
is self-absorption
then the quickest path to joy
is placing your attention on others,
seeing what you can give,
how you can help,
where you can go
to enrich the lives of others.
At the end of your life,
is it the piles of money
you will have amassed,
or the big house
or the fancy car
that will matter?
Or…
will you be able
to say with confidence
I gave all I had
and I loved with my whole heart.
I feel complete now,
knowing that I brought joy
to the people in my life…?
Each day we choose
one or the other…
self absorption
or the kind of selflessness
that can heal the whole world.
You matter.
Your actions matter.
The love you give matters.
Now, more than ever,
the world needs you.
Will you answer the call?
