What does this life mean
if we don’t leave it happier
for having lived it?
And how can we leave life happier
than how we found it
if we aren’t living for those
with whom we share it?
Every day wake up grateful for waking up,
and be grateful for opportunities to be generous.
You are more powerful than you could ever know,
but knowing that you have this power to give
is a great start.
If you knew that living from
your most enlightened self
would bring indescribable joy
to yourself and those around you,
wouldn’t you choose to know that self
completely and to shine its light
out into this whole world?
Your light might be obscured
by your thinking sometimes
the way the sun is obscured behind clouds,
but make no mistake,
your light is always there.
Make it a point to know your light
and to live your life shining it
You are truly beautiful,
powerful, and wise beyond measure.
Let us see this most authentic self
and know the light and the joy of your being.
We go inwards
to find the light
that we are meant
to shine out
into the world.
The work of

As our light glows and grows,
we see more,
and so do those
with whom we share this planet,
The best way
to show your gratitude
for the gifts and talents
you’ve been given
is to use them.
Let the whole world
see who you really are.
Shine your light
into the whole universe.
Know your true self–
boundless, light, and free.
Fall arrives on a whisper of wind
Suddenly, it is dark again
earlier in the evening
and later in the morning
and I have that wistful feeling
reminding me I’ll be letting go
of light and warmth…again.
The in-turning begins.
In truth, though,
it began at the turn of the solstice,
but summer is too bright to notice
how the light recedes ever so subtly,
until, until it is gone from me
and all I have is the memory
of sunlight and bright days and bare feet.
I made a commitment
to reframe my vision–
to no longer call it adversity,
now it is opportunity.
Now is the time to reach deeper still
and remember what lies within.
To embrace the in-turning
and the treasures that await
while my watching eyes fixate
on the breezy summer skies.
This letting go is good for me.
This going inwards is an opportunity.
I won’t fight the fading of the light,
not this time…
I’m ready now.
Come on darkness.
Bring it on.
I keep writing these poems
because it has become a habit
to write one poem every day.
It has become part of my practice
to concentrate my thoughts,
to choose a few words,
to express a sliver of what is alive in me.
Sometimes a sliver is all that is needed
to let in the light the world needs.
The solstice approaches
And I, basking in my hemisphere of light,
think to those who will soon live their darkest night.
In a few days, the longest of the year here in the north,
my half of the earth
will start its tilting course away from the sun
and one by one
the days will grow shorter again.
And thus, when we’ve reached the zenith of the light,
the descent into darkness begins,
while others pull themselves up and out of the blackest night.
The perfect earthly balance continues,
and if we humans could mimic this cosmic orchestry,
we’d finally get something right.
Ah, just lighten up!
That little cloud
of taking life so seriously
follows you around,
hovers just above your head,
and makes everything seem bleak.
Look up at the cloud–
it’s just a bunch of thinking.
Take a deep breath in,
blow it away.
Now you can see the sun shining,
just like it always has.
When you look into the mirror
don’t be afraid–
stand naked and look
at the truth of your being.
Don’t cover yourself
drop the veil
that shields you from being fully alive
and stand fresh and vulnerable and spontaneous,
curious about who you really are.
There is nothing to fear,
open your eyes even wider.
Don’t ask the mirror
to reflect what you want to see
and then break it in anger
when it doesn’t comply.
Look at what is there
and love this self that is you.
The mirror is a friend.
It shows us where
the healing balm of self-love
is most needed.
As we apply this loving kindness to ourselves
the mirror will reflect it
back into the world.
All of our likes and dislikes,
our strengths and weaknesses
our shortcomings and our gifts–
the mirror reflects them all,
shining in the freshness of this now moment.
As we stand and look with courage
at the truth of ourselves
we see the whole world reflected
back to us;
the whole universe is held
in the glint of our eyes.
