Advice I Can Take

Standard

Going through this transition,
everything in my life is changing,
and people (bless their hearts)
want to offer advice:
You’ll need to get a full time job, they say
Your standard of living will go down, they say
Talk to your attorney, they say
It’ll get worse before it gets better, they say
Keep your head down, they say
You’ll be so much happier after this is over, they say.
And I want to say
How do you know what you think is true?
It sounds like what they’re saying comes from fear.
I don’t take advice from frightened people.
I sit and I pray:
Thank you, angels, for making your presence known to me.
Where would you have me go?
What would you have me do?
What would you have me say, and to whom?
They respond:
We would have you stay right where you are.
We would have you breathe.
We would have you tell yourself
“I love you, I forgive you, all is well.”
Now that is some advice I can take!

No Other Way

Standard

When you become a channel for Grace
don’t expect life to make sense.
Grace doesn’t move through your rational mind,
that linear lie of mathematical meaning,
holding on to logic for dear life,
as if it could give us what we yearn for.
Just learn to be still and listen, really listen
to the promptings of your soul.
Be open.  Breathe. Watch. Listen. Feel.
There are signs everywhere
pointing you in the direction you need to go.
And you only ever need to know this moment.
It’s all you ever can know.
Let the armor you’ve built around you fall away
to expose the tender, beautiful self you’ve been hiding.
This tenderness reveals the exquisite sensitivity required
to receive the messages sent to you by the Grace
of all that is.
When you live like this
you realize there is no other way to live.

You’re Alive!

Standard

This day is a huge gift!
How many people who were alive yesterday
didn’t wake up today?
And yet here you are, reading these words—
isn’t it amazing you can look at these symbols
and your precious brain makes meaning of them
in a way that your heart can be touched
or your body may want to move?
At any moment you might breathe deeply
and settle into stillness,
or you may jump up
and run like crazy.
You can
laugh
cry
sing
shout
dance…
Isn’t it amazing?
You’re alive!

Stay Open

Standard

Stay open.
If you’re not deliberately staying open,
you are probably shutting down.
Sure, you might feel safer
hiding your light from the world,
but did you come here to live
in the darkness of your comfort bubble?
Just beyond the edges of that bubble,
your amazing potential awaits,
potential only you can fulfill.
Start by being open to the possibility
that you could stay open
and move on from there.
Take deep breaths.
If you’re feeling uncomfortable
you’ve reached the edge of your comfort zone
and now real growth can take place.
Take a stand for your open mind,
your open heart, your boundless spirit.
Live from your deepest truth,
express the soul fire that burns within you,
and as the changes come,
stay open.

Nothing is Ours

Standard

If I cannot see the beauty
in this moment
then my eyes are not open wide enough.
May I allow my whole self
to open to this moment:
eyes, ears, heart, mind, body, and soul.
May I take it all in,
and give it all away again,
because in this life of impermanence
nothing is ever truly ours.
We live on borrowed time
in bodies that have been rented to us.
Let us honor our agreements,
make good on our contracts,
and when it’s time to move out,
let’s leave the place better than how we found it.

Universal Soul

Standard

But is it even accurate to say
My soul?
When I use words like
I, me, mine,
I’m drawing a line
between who I perceive myself to be
and the rest of life around me.
My experience of the soul
is that it is universal…
this spirit in us that links all of us
draws no lines,
has no boundaries.
It’s only when I’m caught up
in my personal story
that I might see a difference
between my soul and yours.
Words cannot express the truth,
they can only point us in the direction
of some sort of meaning
that approaches our idea of truth.
I cannot adequately describe this feeling of
oneness, connectedness,
that blossoms in me
when I lose my sense of self
and become absorbed
into the Universe of being.
If I had to use words
to describe this state
the most accurate
would not be my soul,
but the soul,
Not my awareness,
simply the awareness.
In such a state
there is no more I.
This feeling of connectedness
guides my decisions, every step.
I could study this feeling my whole life
and never really know what it is.
