You’re Alive!

This day is a huge gift!
How many people who were alive yesterday
didn’t wake up today?
And yet here you are, reading these words—
isn’t it amazing you can look at these symbols
and your precious brain makes meaning of them
in a way that your heart can be touched
or your body may want to move?
At any moment you might breathe deeply
and settle into stillness,
or you may jump up
and run like crazy.
You can
Isn’t it amazing?
You’re alive!

Stay Open

Stay open.
If you’re not deliberately staying open,
you are probably shutting down.
Sure, you might feel safer
hiding your light from the world,
but did you come here to live
in the darkness of your comfort bubble?
Just beyond the edges of that bubble,
your amazing potential awaits,
potential only you can fulfill.
Start by being open to the possibility
that you could stay open
and move on from there.
Take deep breaths.
If you’re feeling uncomfortable
you’ve reached the edge of your comfort zone
and now real growth can take place.
Take a stand for your open mind,
your open heart, your boundless spirit.
Live from your deepest truth,
express the soul fire that burns within you,
and as the changes come,
stay open.

Nothing is Ours

If I cannot see the beauty
in this moment
then my eyes are not open wide enough.
May I allow my whole self
to open to this moment:
eyes, ears, heart, mind, body, and soul.
May I take it all in,
and give it all away again,
because in this life of impermanence
nothing is ever truly ours.
We live on borrowed time
in bodies that have been rented to us.
Let us honor our agreements,
make good on our contracts,
and when it’s time to move out,
let’s leave the place better than how we found it.

Universal Soul

But is it even accurate to say
My soul?
When I use words like
I, me, mine,
I’m drawing a line
between who I perceive myself to be
and the rest of life around me.
My experience of the soul
is that it is universal…
this spirit in us that links all of us
draws no lines,
has no boundaries.
It’s only when I’m caught up
in my personal story
that I might see a difference
between my soul and yours.
Words cannot express the truth,
they can only point us in the direction
of some sort of meaning
that approaches our idea of truth.
I cannot adequately describe this feeling of
oneness, connectedness,
that blossoms in me
when I lose my sense of self
and become absorbed
into the Universe of being.
If I had to use words
to describe this state
the most accurate
would not be my soul,
but the soul,
Not my awareness,
simply the awareness.
In such a state
there is no more I.
This feeling of connectedness
guides my decisions, every step.
I could study this feeling my whole life
and never really know what it is.

The Limitless Space of Pure Being

Our rational, linear minds
with their fixation
on right and wrong
good and bad
male and female
past and future
success and failure–
these minds cannot grasp
the enormity
of the universal soul scape
and how vast the space of our hearts.
We search for solutions
on a thin black line
the full roundness of the globe
dressed in her splendid gown
of cool blue
while at her center
liquid fire burns
to give new life to the
landscape of our dreams
and the stars rise
in the night ocean
and the wind blows
and the cricket hums
and our bodies heal themselves
without a single conscious thought
on our part.
Over thinking is not the solution
to the woes that were caused
by small thinking.
We will not help ourselves
that we can control
the uncontrollable.
We can search
until we are blind
and never catch a glimpse
of that which cannot be seen.
The most precious things
are invisible
and free.
Simply be kind,
especially to yourself.
Let the love you generate
at your center
expand outwards
and bless all beings.
With a love such as this,
who has need
of the pale illusion of control?
Step away from the ground
of what you thought you knew
and soar out into space
wild, unpredictable
at home everywhere
in the limitless space
of pure being.

Your Precious, Unbroken Spirit

In touch with my own pain,
I can allow the suffering of others into my heart
and let the tenderness there envelop us all
in healing compassion.

The way to healing is not avoiding the pain.

The pain is there as our teacher,
and our suffering
a necessary process to move through
and beyond what we once held to be true.

Do not be afraid of your own pain.

Let it in,
learn from it,
let it transform you–
and awaken from the dream
that you are somehow broken
into the reality
of your precious, unbroken spirit.
